New African American Resources

Researching African American family history is getting easier, thanks to a couple of fantastic new on-line resources.

The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana has created a website called the "African American Gateway," with links to resources by state, region, foreign country, and subject headings.

The New England Historic and Genealogical Society has created a new web portal, AfricanAmericanAncestors.org, as an addition to their extensive databases and online resources. This site includes a guide to African American genealogy, and numerous record sources, including digitized pages from the original account book of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Regiment, 1863-1865. Turns out, the commander of the unit was from Boston! You will need a subscription access to search this database -- or, check with your local library to see if they have access. Both the Topeka Genealogical Society Library, and the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library provide free access for library patrons.
